The Pantheon in Rome

The Pantheon in Rome was built by Emperor Hadrian around 126 AD. It stands on the remains of a temple built by Marcus Agrippa around 27 BC, which was destroyed by fire in 80 AD and again by lightning in 110 AD.

Pantheon Dome Oculus

The Pantheon is a masterpiece of ancient Roman architecture and the best-preserved building from that period. Originally a temple dedicated to all the gods, it was later converted into a church. The huge concrete dome is extraordinary, a technical marvel that testifies to the skill of ancient Roman architecture. The oculus, a circular opening in the center of the dome, connects humankind to the heavens. Sunlight, moonlight and even rain fall through the oculus into the interior, creating a truly magical atmosphere.
